Training to take the optional route on cross country

When you are faced with multiple routes or options on the cross country course, you need to be able to make quick decisions and ensure your horse is clear on the route you want to take. This is a simple exercise to check your reactions and get your horse listening to your aids!

Set up two fences on a slight angle to each other, approximately 20 feet apart with an obstacle (replicating what you might find on a cross country course) in between the two fences
Jump the first fence straight, circle and jump the second fence straight (blue line)

The practice jumping both fences together on a curving line without putting in a circle between the two fences (orange line)

Finally jump with a straight line between the fences. You will need to approach each fence on an angle (purple line)
