British Eventing yard visit with Gemma Tattersall

Thanks to Gemma and her wonderful team, a group of lucky BE Members were given the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes, experience the running of a top event yard and meet some of eventings four legged superstars.

The home of Team Tattersall is situated in Horsham and boasts enviable facilities. With 60x30 Martin Collins arena, horse walker and fantastic hacking, it's the perfect set up for producing and training event horses. After a winding lane, on arrival at Tattleton, you are faced with a perfect U shaped yard, designed in a barn-like-style with seven huge loose boxes each side and a range of famous happy heads looking over the doors. The yard is spotless, courtesy of Gemma's fantastic team, who she speaks very highly of, and has a huge tackroom, rug room and feed room, with a picturesque archway leading to an undercover wash and tie-up area with rubber flooring.

There's no doubt that the hacking is fantastic, and the close proximity of the gallops, makes keeping event horses fit a breeze. That alongside an 18x28 lunge pen, isolation box and great turn out facilities makes this yard every event riders dream.

Gemma merrily greeted our members and spoke with pride of her fantastic set up before hopping on her first horse of the day Chilli Knight. By running through some exercises that she uses regularly at home, Gemma gave our competition winners a clear insight into her routine and answered question after question, advising our members on their horses and explaining how she manages her own. Our members were then able to witness the amazing Arctic Soul aka Spike in action, much to everyone's delight before meeting him officially and taking photos. This was followed by a session with a young horse and Gemma explained how she would tailor exercises to a less experienced horse.

Get to know Chilli Knight
Chilli Knight aka Alfie is a 16.2hh, nine year old chestnut gelding owned by Chris Stone. He is the offspring of Chilli Morning and King's Gem - an impressive coupling! 'He has a similar brain, amazing mind and a similar canter' to his infamous sire claimed Gemma, as well as having a very trainable attitude which was demonstrated in his ridden work. Despite being a fairly plain horse at home, Gemma proudly said that when he goes to a competition he 'rises and wins the prize.' Alfie is being aimed for Pau CCI5*-L and will be doing to 8&9 year old classes at the SsangYong Blenheim Palace Horse Trials in September.

Get to know Arctic Soul
The Soul Syndicate's Arctic Soul aka Spike is a 16.3hh bay gelding out of Luso and Dream Cocktail and at 16 years old he as an old hat at eventing and certainly knows his job! He is a character on the ground but comes into his own at an event and is genuine, straight and scopey. To get fit Spike gallops every 4th day and spends time trotting hills as well as hacking which he really enjoys. Gemma jumps him once every 10 days and ensures that he doesn't get bored with lots of schooling but is very conscious to keep him supple and fit.

Following her schooling sessions, Gemma gave a tour of her immaculate yard, introducing famous name after famous name; Quicklook V, Pamero 4 and Santiago Bay to name a few. The day concluded with questions and plans for the future.

Thank you to Gemma and her team for an insightful and inspirational day.
